The Davis Police Department is warning the public about an Internet scam in which the victim is led to believe he owes money to a New York state attorney’s office.
Lt. Glenn Glasgow said the sender of the email, which was received by a Davis resident on Monday, purports to be from the New York State Attorney’s Office in Amenia, New York, and demands restitution payments. Attached to the email is what appears to be an arrest warrant for the recipient, sent by “Todd Jefferson.”
Glasgow said local police contacted sheriff’s officials in Amenia, who verified that this is an ongoing scam and that there is no state attorney’s office in that town. Anyone who receives a similar email is urged to contact the New York State Attorney’s Office at 800-771-7755, or online at www.ag.ny.gov.
If you have received a similar email and complied with the demand for money, contact your local police department, Glasgow advised.
