Police warn of PG&E phone scam

The Davis Police Department is warning the public about a recent telephone scam in which the caller claims to be from PG&E.

According to police, those on the receiving end of the calls — most of them businesses — are told they have an outstanding balance with the utility company and are at risk of having their services turned off if the balance is not paid. In some cases, victims are instructed to load the balance onto a MoneyPak prepaid card.

Police say that legitimate PG&E employees do not ask customers for financial information. If there is any doubt regarding these calls, PG&E advises hanging up and calling 800-743-5000 to confirm whether there is a billing issue.
