A former youth sports coach from Dixon convicted of having sex with an underage girl was given jail time and probation this week but he won’t have to register as a sex offender, according to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.
Troy Anthony Hensley, 38, also must refrain from coaching or holding any leadership position in youth sports — though he can attend events as a spectator — under the terms handed down Tuesday by Yolo Superior Court Judge David Rosenberg.
The sentence calls for Hensley, a married father of five, to serve a year in county jail, plus four years of formal probation.
“We are pleased that Judge Rosenberg imposed the maximum jail sentence allowed by law and also severely restricted Mr. Hensley’s ability to be around children,” prosecuting attorney Deanna Hays said. “Mr. Hensley’s conduct in taking advantage of his positions of trust, his status in the community, and his marriage and family made his conduct even more egregious.”
Originally facing 44 charges in connection with his relationship with a 17-year-old girl, Hensley entered into a plea agreement in November in which he admitted to two counts of two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and one count of digital penetration.
The remaining 41 counts were dismissed as part of the plea deal, including allegations that Hensley threatened the teen if she disclosed the relationship to anyone.
Police arrested Hensley in June 2013 in Davis, where authorities say some of the unlawful conduct occurred at hotels and other locations during the 3 1/2-month relationship. Hensley, a former youth sports coach at Dixon High School, was accused of starting the relationship with the girl while they both worked at a Dixon restaurant.
Hensley’s attorney, Steven Sabbadini, said Rosenberg “got it right” in not requiring sex-offender registration for his client.
“Our office conducted a thorough investigation … and the facts revealed that this was a consensual, mutual, but unlawful relationship with a woman that was close to 18 years of age, and that no threats or intimidation were involved,” Sabbadini said. “As a result of our investigation, we were able to reach a reasonable resolution on behalf of Mr. Hensley.”
