The suspect in a South Davis carjacking has been identified as an Arkansas man whose rap sheet may explain why he ran from the cops Monday afternoon.

James Hammons, 34, is a parolee at large wanted on six felony warrants charging him with forgery, fraud, burglary, identity theft and being a fugitive from justice, Davis police Lt. Glenn Glasgow said Tuesday. He remains in custody at the Yolo County Jail.

Hammons now faces additional charges of carjacking, evading, resisting arrest and possessing a stolen vehicle.

Glasgow said Hammons ran from a patrol officer who was checking on a suspected stolen car parked outside the Motel 6 on Chiles Road. He allegedly used force to take another car from a woman at a nearby Taco Bell parking lot before fleeing toward the Yolo Bypass area, where the officer lost sight of the car on a gravel levee road.

Authorities found Hammons about four hours later, lying in a corn field near County Roads 106 and 38, southeast of Davis. He was apprehended by a police K-9 after refusing surrender commands, Glasgow said.

Police also arrested Sara Lee Mathews, 39, who tried to gain access to Hammons’ motel room Monday night as officers waited to search the premises. The Arkansas woman also had been wanted on a no-bail warrant.
