The post office in downtown Davis was temporarily closed this week following a fire inside the 237 D St. building — one of four small fires under investigation by Davis police.

According to the Davis Fire Department, firefighters were extinguishing a trash can fire at 221 D St. shortly before 5:30 a.m. Sunday when the owner of a neighboring restaurant reported light smoke inside his business. Upon further investigation, crews discovered a recycling bin on fire inside the post office building at 237 D St.

That incident was upgraded to second-alarm status before the fire was extinguished, Fire Department spokeswoman Evelyn George said. She said both the D Street fires, plus two bus shelter fires reported later that morning along Cowell Boulevard, are believed to have been intentionally set.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400.
