The Davis Fire Department is investigating the cause of a South Davis apartment complex fire that resulted in the injury of a fire captain after he fell off the building’s second story.

Residents of four units at the Renaissance Park Apartments, 3000 Lillard Drive, were displaced as a result of the first-alarm blaze, which was first reported at 10:30 p.m. Thursday as a balcony fire, department spokeswoman Evelyn George said.

Four apartments — two on the first floor and two on the second — sustained mostly exterior smoke and fire damage, and total losses were estimated at $500,000, George said. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

The fire captain, whose name was not released, was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center with moderate injuries following the fall and had been released as of this morning, according to George. She said some bushes broke his fall “to a certain extent,” but he landed on the pavement on his back, which had a breathing apparatus strapped to it.

The fire was deemed under control at about 11:15 p.m., and firefighters cleared the scene at about 2:15 a.m. today, George said. An acting fire captain took over the captain’s duties following the fall, and off-duty personnel were brought in to assist while West Sacramento firefighters provided station coverage.
