Woodland police say a Davis man brandished a toy handgun at officers before leading them on a two-county pursuit Thursday morning.
Teddy Chuang, 37, was taken into custody at the front entrance of Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, where an officer used a Taser to subdue Chuang after he refused to comply with commands, Woodland police Lt. Anthony Cucchi said.
A total of four law-enforcement agencies took part in Thursday’s incident, which began at about 8:50 a.m. when employees of the Target store on Bronze Star Drive in Woodland called police to report a possible theft in progress.
Target workers directed the first officer on the scene toward a silver Honda Civic, where the driver — later identified as Chuang — “brandished a handgun at the officer and fled out of the parking lot,” Cucchi said. A pursuit ensued on northbound County Road 102, then south on Highway 113 toward Davis, with Chuang allegedly making threatening hand gestures while pointing the weapon into the air.
California Highway Patrol officers took over the pursuit on westbound Interstate 80 in Dixon, with Woodland officers still assisting as it reached the front gates of the Air Force base, Cucchi said. Fairfield police and the U.S. Air Force military police also assisted as Chuang was taken into custody.
Officers determined upon Chuang’s arrest that the apparent firearm was a realistic-looking toy gun, according to Cucchi.
Chuang was lodged at the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of robbery, burglary and felony evading, Cucchi said. He said Chuang is not believed to be a member of the Air Force, and it was unclear why he was attempting to enter the Travis base.
