July is Fraud Awareness Month, Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced this week. The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office provides many services to find, investigate and prosecute such offenses.
The Workers Compensation Unit, together with the State Department of Insurance, protects honest businesses against unscrupulous individuals and businesses who either do not have the needed insurance to protect their workers or who submit false claims for services.
The Consumer Fraud Unit is a part of the Consumer Fraud and Environmental Crimes Division. This unit seeks a level playing field for all businesses by ensuring that Yolo County consumers receive no less than that for which they have bargained. The unit works with other county agencies as well as other state agencies so that no matter where a business is located within the state, Yolo County consumers are protected.
The Auto Fraud Unit is Yolo County’s primary investigative agency, tasked with investigating auto insurance fraud. By ferreting out fraudulent claims, the goal is to keep everyone’s insurance rates as low as possible.
The Welfare Fraud Unit, together with the Yolo County Department of Employment and Social Services, fights public assistance fraud. The two units together help ensure that money is available to help those who truly need it while holding accountable those who try to steal from the public coffers.
While there are many units and resources dedicated to combating fraud, constant vigilance is the key to protection. Anyone who knows of fraudulent activities in the county is asked to call 530-666-8180 or the newly established toll-free fraud hot line, 855-4-YOLO DA. Emails should be sent to District.Attorney@yolocounty.org.
