A noose found in a tree near the Esparto Cemetery earlier this month is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

A passerby discovered the noose on Friday, Nov. 13, while walking in the area, Yolo County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Matt Davis said. He confirmed the incident Tuesday after The Davis Enterprise received a tip from a citizen.

Davis said the noose was affixed to a tree across the street from the cemetery, located on County Road 22 west of County Road 85B.

“It was referred to detectives, who are conducting follow-up,” including questioning other residents in the area, Davis said. “We were unable to identify a person who was targeted, so it’s unknown whether it was targeting someone or related to the cemetery.”

Anyone who is able to shed light on the investigation is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 530-668-5280 or 530-666-8282, or leave an anonymous tip at 530-668-5248.
