A motorist may owe her life to a Davis police officer who pulled her from the burning wreckage of her car Saturday night, the Davis Police Department said Monday in releasing video of the incident.
Cpl. Pheng Ly was on patrol at about 10:30 p.m. when he was dispatched to eastbound Interstate 80 near Kidwell Road, where witnesses reported a vehicle on fire in the area, Deputy Police Chief Paul Doroshov said.
Ly arrived to find the vehicle overturned, its engine compartment and part of the passenger compartment fully engulfed in flames.
“Corporal Ly ran towards the vehicle and found that a person was trapped inside,” Doroshov said. “As the flames grew, Corporal Ly extracted a female from inside the vehicle and moved her to safety. Minutes after the rescue, the vehicle became completely engulfed in flames.”
Emergency personnel transported the injured woman to an area hospital, where California Highway Patrol officers who took over the investigation arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to Doroshov.
Davis police released video from both Ly’s body camera and the dash camera of his patrol vehicle.
