A Woodland man is in Yolo County Jail custody after allegedly committing multiple crimes in less than a day’s time, two of the offenses targeting a child and an elderly couple, the Woodland Police Department reported Friday.
The repeated encounters with Jorge Luis Ruela DeLeon Sanchez began shortly before 6:30 p.m. last Wednesday, when officers received a report of a man attempting to lure a child from the parents and making threats at Crawford Park on College Street and El Dorado Drive, Sgt. Victoria Danzl said.
Officers detained Sanchez, 45, who “made statements that didn’t make sense and seemed delusional,” Danzl said. “Based on the statements and actions, Sanchez was placed on a mental-health hold as a danger to others.”
Sanchez was transported to a local hospital, where staff determined he did not meet the criteria for a hold, Danzl said. Police re-arrested him on suspicion of annoying a child and took him to the Yolo County Jail, where he was cited and released.
(Yolo County sheriff’s Lt. Matt Davis told The Davis Enterprise that Sanchez’s swift release was not a result of the county’s emergency zero-bail order, but rather standard procedure for the child-annoyance charge, which is a misdemeanor.)
Sanchez resurfaced the following morning in the 400 block of Gibson Road, where he allegedly confronted his mother and her boyfriend at about 11:10 a.m. Thursday.
According to Danzl, Sanchez “pulled his mother’s elderly boyfriend out of his vehicle and stole his cell phone from his belt. Sanchez then ordered the boyfriend and his mother to take him to the bank and withdraw $5,000.”
When the couple refused his demands, Sanchez pulled his mother across the street and attempted to get her into his truck, but was unsuccessful and fled the scene, Danzl said.
From there, Sanchez made his way south to the 400 block of Colusa Place, where residents told police he attempted to enter a home, “then ran around surrounding neighborhoods at times with no clothing on,” fondling himself and vandalizing several vehicles on Camino Way, Danzl said.
Officers caught up to Sanchez back at the Gibson Road address, arresting him on charges of kidnapping, robbery, elder abuse, attempted burglary and vandalism, according to Danzl.
Police returned Sanchez to the Yolo County Jail, obtaining a $200,000 bail enhancement and emergency protective order for his mother and boyfriend, Danzl said. He’s due Yolo Superior Court on Monday for arraignment.
