A fire at the Yolo County Central Landfill north of Davis early Thursday morning sent additional smoke into an atmosphere already hazy from Northern California wildfires.
According to the Davis Fire Department, the fire ignited at about 1 a.m. at the County Road 28H landfill off Pole Line Road and reached about a half-acre in size, burning shredded tire materials and threatening a nearby lumber-storage area.
“Firefighters kept the fire from spreading and contained it to the shredded tire material,” fire officials posted on social media. “Around 25 firefighters battled the fire throughout the early morning hours.”
Davis crews received mutual aid from the UC Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento fire departments, which sent water tenders to the fire scene and provided station coverage in the city during the incident, the cause of which remains under investigation.
“Fire units will remain on scene along with Yolo County Landfill personnel as the fire continues to smolder,” officials said.
The Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District noted on Twitter that smoke from the fire rose several hundred feet into the air and moved south. “It is not expected to cause any public nuisance, but will be visible to people in the area,” the tweet said.
