The man whose body was found in Putah Creek in Winters on Saturday morning has been identified as a 61-year-old Winters resident whose family had reported him missing the day before.
Joseph Francis Purtill left his home at about 5 p.m. Friday without telling anyone his destination, Winters police said in missing-person alert issued on Facebook and Twitter later that night. He had been considered at risk due to needing an oxygen tank to breathe.
Police updated the alert Saturday to say that Purtill had been located, but gave no further details. The agency also announced in a separate social media post that a man’s body had been found at about 7:15 a.m. that morning in Putah Creek.
According to Sgt. Albert Ramos, a passerby discovered the body while walking on a path along the creek south of the Winters Community Center.
“At this point there doesn’t seem to be any foul play,” Ramos added. Yolo County Chief Deputy Coroner Gina Moya, who released Purtill’s identity at about 4 p.m. Saturday, said his cause of death would be determined via an autopsy next week.
Meanwhile, anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Winters Police Department at 530-795-4561.
