Crashed truck lands on Davis railroad tracks

Train travel through Davis was delayed Monday night after a delivery truck left the freeway and came to rest on the railroad tracks along Second Street.

Davis Fire Department Capt. Richard Moore said the Safeway box truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the truck veered through a cyclone fence and onto the tracks at about 6:40 p.m.

Fire crews arrived to find the male driver sitting on the tracks, suffering only from minor cuts and scratches to his arms, Moore said. However, due to the extensive damage to the truck — the box became separated from the truck bed — the driver was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for an evaluation.

Amtrak reported via Twitter that four of its Capitol Corridor trains experienced delays as a result of the wreck. Bus service was dispatched to shuttle passengers between Davis and Sacramento at one point, and rail service resumed with speed restrictions about an hour after the crash.
