UPDATE: Police cleared the scene shortly before 10:30 a.m. after finding nothing suspicious inside the ammunition canister, which according to Lt. Art Camacho contained old tools and other various items. It was unclear who left it in the Davis school district parking area.

All roads have been reopened except for C Street between Fifth and Sixth streets, police said.

Original story:

Several blocks surrounding the Davis Joint Unified School District offices have been shut down while police investigate a suspicious item left in a parking area there.

According to Davis police Lt. Art Camacho, the police department was alerted at about 7:30 a.m. to the item, described as green ammunition canister roughly the size of a shoebox, left in a rear driveway at the school district offices at Fifth and C streets.

While there was nothing else suspicious attached to the canister, such as wiring, “out of an abundance of caution we did call EOD to the scene” to further investigate the item, Camacho said, referring to an explosive ordnance disposal team.

Police have cordoned off several blocks in that area, including C Street and Fifth Street between A and F streets, while the investigation is underway, Camacho said. Citizens are asked to avoid the area until further notice.
