Two people died in a fiery collision early Friday morning near the town of Zamora, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash occurred at about 12:15 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 south of County Road 95, where officers arrived to find a box truck had collided with a Ford sport-utility vehicle, CHP Officer Rodney Fitzhugh said.
According to reports, the investigation revealed that Luis Salas of Pacoima, Calif., the driver of the box truck, had been stopped on the right shoulder of I-5. As he entered the traffic lanes from the shoulder, the crash occurred between his vehicle and the Ford driven by Jose Favela of Littlerock, CA.
“As a result of this collision, both vehicles became engulfed in fire,” Fitzhugh said. “Two people were unable to exit the Ford and succumbed to the injuries they sustained in this collision.”
The victims, both women, died at the scene, the CHP reported. Yolo County coroner’s officials were expected to release their names once their identities are determined.
Two others in the Ford, a 55-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl, also of Littlerock, were transported to the UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the collision, Fitzhugh said. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Woodland CHP office at 530- 662-4685.
