A first-alarm fire at the Alvarado Sunset Apartments early this morning displaced six families from their homes but caused no injuries, the Davis Fire Department reported.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze, which was reported shortly before 3:30 a.m. when a neighbor spotted smoke coming from unit 69, Capt. Scott Paustian said.

Fire crews from Davis and UC Davis responded to the scene, arriving to find flames coming from the roof of the two-story unit, Paustian said. Although the fire was knocked down quickly, it had spread to the attic of the apartment next door and damaged four others as well.

The apartment where the fire began was unoccupied at the time, Paustian said. The apartment manager and American Red Cross are making alternative living arrangements for the six displaced families, comprising about 20 people in all.
