What was that ‘boom’ sound? Not us, says PG&E

A loud “boom” sound that shook houses and frightened people and pets alike over a wide stretch of Davis on Wednesday night was not the result of a blown electrical transformer, a PG&E spokeswoman said Thursday.

Social media in Davis lit up around 10:40 p.m. in response to the noise, which some Facebook and Nextdoor users described as a “huge explosion sound,” perhaps a firework. Some suggested that a transformer blew at the PG&E facility at Second and L streets. Meanwhile, police received reports of shots fired and a “bright light” in the L Street area.

But the sound wasn’t caused by PG&E equipment, said spokeswoman Brandi Merlo, who noted that the only transformer to malfunction in the city on Wednesday was located in the Elmwood Drive area. It blew around 6:55 p.m., causing a power outage that affected 53 customers for just over 11 hours.
