Law-enforcement officers descended upon a South Davis neighborhood Tuesday night, searching for suspects in a Vacaville theft and freeway pursuit, according to Davis police.

Lt. Mike Munoz said it all began at a Lowe’s store in Vacaville, where four people “committed a high-dollar theft” and fled the business in a vehicle. Vacaville police caught sight of the car, and a chase ensued on eastbound Interstate 80 that also involved the California Highway Patrol.

Sgt. David Spencer of the Vacaville Police Department said the suspects included a male driver in a white T-shirt and two females in red or pink shirts.

The suspect vehicle exited in Davis. Before that, however, the car pulled over at one point and one of the occupants jumped out.

“That person claimed to have been a carjacking victim” after being detained by police, Munoz said. “Through investigation, they later found out that this person was one of the suspects.”

Meanwhile, the car with the three remaining suspects abandoned the vehicle on Mono Place, and the occupants scattered in different directions on foot, Munoz said. Police set up a perimeter and searched the neighborhood by land and air, but none had been caught as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

At that point, police were no longer actively searching for the trio, and they were not believed to pose a public-safety threat.

“They could still be in the area or they could be waiting for a ride to come get them,” Spencer said. “I do believe they’re probably still here somewhere.”

Although social media reports indicated one of the suspects was armed, Munoz said police received no information that any of them possessed firearms.

Social media reports that the car had crashed in to a house also were incorrect, Munoz said.

Additional details will be added to this story as they become available.
