It was anything but a slow night Tuesday for Woodland California Highway Patrol officers who found themselves caught up in a high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle.
Officer Bryan Konvalin said the agency was notified at about 10 p.m. of a reckless driver entering Yolo County from Solano County on eastbound Interstate 80. Officers positioned themselves along the freeway, on the lookout for a teal Saturn that had been reported stolen out of Hayward.
An officer spotted the speeding car as it passed the County Road 32B exit east of Davis and followed it, not attempting to stop the vehicle until backup units arrived, Konvalin said. A stop was attempted on I-80 near the I-5 interchange, but the driver failed to yield.
The chase then moved south on I-5 to the J Street exit and continued on surface streets at speeds over 50 mph until the driver stopped in the area of 14th and J streets. Konvalin said the driver and passenger fled on foot but were found hiding behind a nearby business.
Officers arrested the driver, 18-year-old Hakiem Kwame Rentie of Hayward and a 17-year-old Sacramento boy in connection with the incident, which Konvalin said ended without causing any injuries or property damage.
