A weekend assault that left a Davis man hospitalized is being investigated as a hate crime, Davis police said Monday.
Lt. Glenn Glasgow said the victim, who is in his 30s, may have been targeted over his sexual orientation while attending a house party in the 300 block of I Street early Sunday morning. Police were summoned there by a 911 call at about 3:50 a.m., arriving to find the man unconscious, with moderate to major injuries.
“Although the investigation is continuing, officers were able to determine that there was a physical altercation that took place in the front yard,” Glasgow said. Whether anyone witnessed the assault directly, however, remains unclear.
“We have people that came in after the fact,” Glasgow said. As of Monday, details remained “very cloudy — we’re really trying to pick through the pieces” to determine what took place.
Glasgow did not have specific information about the victim’s injuries, but he was listed in good condition Monday afternoon at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, a hospital spokesman said.
A second man also was hurt and had minor injuries when police arrived on scene, but he refused medical aid. Glasgow said investigators are still trying to determine the relationship between the two victims.
