The smoke that drifted into Davis during the night is from a vegetation fire burning in Zamora, according to the city’s fire chief.
“It’s just kind of hovering over the whole area,” Daryl Arbuthnott said, citing gusty winds as the culprit in pushing residual smoke to the south.
The fire is expected to continue burning today and possibly into tomorrow, said Arbuthnott, who cautioned Davis residents to take precautions to protect their health.
“If you don’t need to be outside, then don’t,” he said. Residents also should keep their windows and doors closed until the smoke dissipates.
Arbuthnott said his department also has advised the Davis school district to limit students’ outdoor activities in the smoky air.
