A Davis man was arrested for allegedly attacking a member of a work crew that was cleaning up homeless camps last weekend in the area of Cannery Loop in North Davis.
Police said that at about 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, a work crew contracted by the railroad was confronted by a man who subsequently was identified as William Joel Eckberg, 38, of Davis.
The crew told police that Eckberg was upset about the cleanup. He allegedly picked up a hatchet and attempted to strike a member of the crew while he was sitting in his vehicle. In the course of the confrontation, the suspect allegedly head-butted the victim, attempted to strike him with a bottle and then struck him with a rock, police reported.
The victim’s colleagues were able to fight off the suspect. The victim suffered minor injuries.
Officers were called to the scene, where they arrested Eckberg for assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Yolo County Jail in Woodland.
