Woodland man arrested after standoff

Woodland police took a man into custody Tuesday morning after he barricaded himself inside his apartment for more than an hour, officers said.

According to Sgt. Brett Hancock, police were summoned at about 7:50 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 300 block of North Street, where a 73-year-old man reported being struck by his son who was armed with a screwdriver or a knife.

Officers arrived and contacted the son, identified as Jorge Ahumada, 41, in front of the apartment. Ahumada allegedly brandished a screwdriver at police and ignored demands to drop it. He then went into the apartment and locked himself inside, prompting the Police Department’s Tactical Operations Team to respond to the scene.

“For over an hour, communication with Ahumada was attempted via public-address system and a remote phone,” Hancock said. “When these methods were not successful, chemical agents and a Taser were used to successfully detain Ahumada, resulting in no injuries.”

Ahumada was taken to Woodland Memorial Hospital for a routine medical clearance, then booked into the Yolo County Jail for four active warrants, felony elder abuse, brandishing a weapon and obstructing peace officers in commission of their duties.

“The Woodland Police Department would like to thank the displaced residents in the area, who showed patience and understanding during a stressful situation,” Hancock said.
