Fire crews endured high temperatures and gusty winds Thursday fighting Yolo County’s first major wildfire of the season, but gained some control of the blaze during the night as those conditions improved.

Dubbed the Winter Fire, the incident at Highway 128 and Pleasant View Road roughly three miles southwest of Winters stood at 1,800 acres and was 25 percent contained as of 8:10 a.m. today, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection website.

“Firefighters will have a challenging day on the fire line improving containment and control lines,” Cal Fire officials reported. “The terrain in the area is grassy oak woodland, challenging steep terrains and difficult access with dry, dense vegetation.”

The blaze triggered mandatory evacuations for residents of Los Positos Estates and Golden Bear Estates, although the Los Positos order has since been lifted. Road closures are in effect at Highway 128 between Pleasants Valley Road and Berryessa Dam.

The cause of the fire, which began shortly after 12:40 p.m. Thursday, remains under investigation.

About 580 personnel were on scene as of this morning from Cal Fire and multiple fire departments from Yolo and Solano counties.
