Firefighters battled a fast-moving grass fire along Interstate 5 on Wednesday as temperatures soared above 100 degrees.
Eric Zane, battalion chief for the Woodland Fire Department, said the blaze began in the freeway’s center median at about 10:30 a.m. when a vehicle pulling a travel trailer experienced a mechanical failure near East Street.
“Woodland and Yolo fire personnel were dispatched and it was quickly determined the fire would require additional resources to combat the fast-moving flames” due to the high temperatures, low humidity and winds, Zane said in a news release.
A total of 15 fire rigs responded to the scene, including two units from Davis.
Zane credited firefighters’ “aggressive actions” with containing the fire to about 10 acres, sparing a nearby pallet yard and rice hulls stored at Pacific International Rice Mills.
No injuries were reported, and crews cleared the scene at about 2 p.m.
