A 30-year-old Sacramento man was sentenced to 78 years to life in prison last week for his conviction on charges of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, violations of restraining orders, domestic violence and resisting arrest and enhancements related to a forcible sex crime occurring during a burglary and during an aggravated kidnapping.

Marcelus Coleman’s sentence, handed down June 9 by Yolo Superior Court Judge David Reed, also included enhancements for having a prior strike offense and prior prison commitment, District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced.

At midnight on Jan. 11, 2017, Coleman arrived at the home of the mother of his children in violation of two restraining orders, according to Reisig. When allowed inside the home by one of the children, Coleman went into the victim’s bedroom and forcibly orally copulated her while her 2-year-old child was asleep in the same bed. When the victim escaped the bedroom, Coleman pushed her back into the bedroom in front of her 12-year-old child and raped her.

“The defendant showed no remorse for his actions or the impact of his crimes on the victim and her children,” prosecuting attorney Jennifer McHugh said. “This jury heard remarkably courageous testimony from the victim as well as from a minor child who was unfortunately subjected to witnessing the terror of a domestic violence attack.”
