A 57-year-old Davis man took his own life at the Davis Cemetery early Tuesday morning, according to the Davis Police Department.

Deputy Police Chief Ton Phan said the man called dispatchers at about 12:30 a.m., threatened to commit suicide “and said he would be in the cemetery.”

The man indicated he was armed with a gun, which for safety reasons prompted officers to set up a perimeter around the Pole Line Road property instead of making an immediate entry, Phan said. For the next two hours, police used a public-address system to attempt to communicate with the man while a California Highway Patrol helicopter circled overhead.

After receiving no response, a team of officers entered the cemetery at about 2:45 a.m., “and that’s when we located him” with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Phan said. No other injuries were reported.
