A high-speed police pursuit in Woodland on Thursday left one teenager dead, another hospitalized and a third in jail facing vehicular manslaughter charges.
The teen who died, a 16-year-old boy, had not been publicly identified as of this morning.
Woodland police Sgt. Tom Davis said the events leading to the fatal crash began shortly before 4 p.m. when officers attempted to arrest the 16-year-old on seven outstanding felony warrants. He was seen getting into a vehicle on Wisconsin Avenue along with a 17-year-old boy and the driver, identified as Trevor Wright, 18, of Woodland.
Wright “took off at a high rate of speed” after spotting police cars, launching a pursuit during which a pistol was tossed out a passenger window, Davis said.
“As the suspect vehicle entered the intersection of Woodland Avenue and Palm Avenue, it became airborne, then lost control and collided with a parked vehicle and a tree,” Davis said. Wright reportedly fled from the wreckage, leaving the two other teens trapped inside with major injuries.
Both had to be extricated from the vehicle and were transported to the UC Davis Medical Center, where the 16-year-old died, Davis said. The 17-year-old was listed in stable condition.
Officers arrested Wright about a block away from the crash scene, Davis said. He was booked into the Yolo County Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter, evading police causing death and injury, hit and run and DUI.
