A 44-year-old man recently released from prison found himself back in custody Saturday after allegedly assaulting a Woodland police officer.
Reggie Joe Dickerson was on searchable probation for grand theft when the officer stopped him at 12:45 a.m. for riding a bike on a sidewalk and without a light in the 100 block of West Main Street, Woodland police Sgt. Aaron Delao said.
“As the officer was conducting a search of Dickerson’s person, the officer felt an object he believed to be contraband in Dickerson’s shirt,” Delao said in a news release. “When the officer tried to retrieve the object, Dickerson spun his body away, almost causing the officer to fall on the ground.”
Dickerson allegedly elbowed the officer repeatedly during the scuffle, sending him and the officer off the sidewalk and into the roadway, Delao said. Dickerson reportedly pulled a glass pipe from his shirt and threw it onto the road, while the officer deployed his police dog from his patrol car.
The K-9 was able to subdue Dickerson, who was held at gunpoint by the officer until backup officers arrived on scene to take him into custody, Delao said.
Woodland firefighters and ambulance personnel treated the officer on scene for hand injuries and body scrapes, Delao said. Dickerson was treated for dog bite injuries at Woodland Memorial Hospital before being lodged at the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of resisting an officer using force, resisting an officer causing injury and a violation of probation.
