4 arrested in Woodland stabbing death, the city’s third homicide this year

The Woodland Police Department has arrested four suspects in the fatal stabbing of a man Tuesday evening at the Casa Del Sol mobile home park, 709 East St. The incident — Woodland’s third homicide this year — grew more violent when a passerby shot at officers at the crime scene.

According to information posted this morning on the department’s Facebook page, officers were dispatched shortly after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday to the mobile home park for reports of an altercation.

They arrived to find a male stabbing victim, who succumbed to his injuries despite lifesaving efforts at the scene. Several others who were there were taken to the police station for questioning about the incident.

“While officers were processing the crime scene a vehicle drove past the scene on East Street,” police officials reported. “An occupant of the vehicle yelled derogatory remarks at the officers and shot at the officers with an unknown caliber firearm. One round narrowly missed several officers who were standing at the scene and then struck an unoccupied police vehicle.”

Additional officers from the region were summoned to provide scene security following that incident.

Two men and two women have been arrested and charged with murder and gang activity. They are Alexis Ivan Velasquez, 18; Justin Mathew Gonzalez, 22; Cynthia Maria Tello, 23; and Vanessa Ramos, 22. The two women also were charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Anyone with information about the stabbing or the shooting is urged to call Woodland Police Dispatch at 530-666-2411.

It’s been a violent summer in the Woodland community, where police also investigated a pair of shootings on June 29 and July 1 that left two men dead. The first fatality, of Arnulfo Bermudez Jr., remains unsolved.
