Longtime Davis resident John Youmans has been upgraded from critical to fair condition at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, four days after being injured in a bicycle crash on Highway 1 in Sonoma County.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Youmans, 59, crashed at about 5:05 p.m. Friday while traveling northbound on Highway 1 between the Russian River bridge and the town of Jenner. He hit the wall of a steep embankment at a slight curve in a mainly straight stretch of the highway, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.
An initial witness told CHP officers that Youmans may have been struck by a hit-and-run driver, but evidence at the scene indicated that Youmans may have crashed on his own, the newspaper reported. The CHP has asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call them at 707-551-4100.
