Police are warning of an incident in which two men posed as city workers while possibly casing a West Davis house.

According to a Nixle alert, two men wearing orange safety vests with “City of Davis” printed on them spoke with a resident in the 2100 block of Alameda Avenue shortly after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and claimed to be there to repair sprinkler timers. They asked about dogs on the premises.

The men were not city of Davis employees, officials have since confirmed. They were described as white males, both about 50 years old. One was of average height and build with short gray hair and clean-cut. The other was described only as slender.

Police note that Davis city employees carry identification cards and should present them upon request. If those claiming to be city employees are unable to produce an identification card, the resident can call their associated department to verify the work to be performed at their residence. The Police Department also can be called to verify their identity.

There have been instances in the past where suspects pose as utility workers to commit various crimes such as residential burglaries and copper theft, police say. If you see suspicious people in your neighborhood, you are urged to call the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400.

Residents also are encouraged to form Neighborhood Watch groups as an additional security measure.
