UPDATE: Deborah Westergaard’s condition has been upgraded from critical to fair, a UC Davis Medical Center spokesman reported this afternoon. The collision remains under investigation.

Original story:

A Davis woman was hospitalized with significant injuries Thursday after being struck by a car while jogging on F Street, according to the Davis Police Department.

Deborah Westergaard, 48, was using the crosswalk south of Covell Boulevard to run from the Davis Little League fields to Community Park when she was hit by a southbound Chevy Silverado truck at about 1:15 p.m., Deputy Chief Ton Phan said.

The impact caused “moderate to major” facial injuries to Westergaard as well as multiple lacerations and abrasions to her arms, according to Phan. She was transported by ambulance to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where she was listed in critical condition Thursday evening.

Phan said the collision remains under investigation by the police department, though it does not appear that the driver, identified as 27-year-old Joseph Thompson of Winters, was impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident.

Investigators also are trying to determine whether the crosswalk area’s flashing lights were activated as Westergaard cross the roadway, Phan said.
