California Highway Patrol officers responded to two fatal traffic collisions on Highway 16 over the weekend.
A pedestrian was killed in the first incident shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday after walking into the eastbound traffic lane on Highway 16 about a mile east of Interstate 505. Officers said the driver, 61-year-old Suraj Singh of Woodland, braked and veered to the left but was unable to avoid hitting the man.
Singh’s Ford truck ran off the road into a field, resulting in minor injuries to his passenger, according to the CHP. The pedestrian, identified as 26-year-old Eric Ward Johnson of Woodland, died at the scene.
A second collision Sunday on Highway 16 west of the Cache Creek Bridge near Guinda resulted in the death of a female motorcyclist, officers said.
Christine Hermes, 58, of Woodland, was riding a Honda motorcycle eastbound at about 3:05 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, she crossed into the oncoming lane. The motorcycle went down on its side and slid underneath a westbound GMC truck driven by Maxwell resident Thomas Winslow, 66, resulting in fatal injuries to Hermes.
Both collisions remain under investigation.
